Since the Reverend John Williams was eaten by cannibals on a South Pacific Island for trying to sell them the bible in the 1700s, it has become a most popular cruise region. Most South Pacific cruises call at Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea and Huahine, which have wonderful marine life beaches. The sea is perfect for snorkelling, sailing, parasailing and the world’s best deep sea fishing. There are also exciting safari trips for cruisers onshore. The Cook Islands have unspoilt volcanic green islands, beautiful beaches, exotic foods, and sunny atolls.
The Fiji Islands are yet another great cruise destination with its chain of 300 islands. The two main islands being Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Papua New Guinea with its mountain peaks, islands and brilliant diving locations also has great flora and fauna, for any budding botanist. There are over forty species of Birds Of Paradise, hundreds of butterflies, and over 2,000 species of orchid.
Samoa, an independent state, is where Robert Louis Stevenson spent his last two years and is known as the Treasure Island of the South Pacific. The Solomon Islands’ rainforest, mountains, and rivers rushing into a winding coastline make for a great onshore adventure. The ocean is beautiful ocean for divers.
Tonga, another S.Pacific Island is an ancient kingdom with great fishing, which is known as The Crown Jewel of the South Pacific. The explorer Captain Cook named it the ‘friendly islands’.
New Caledonia is famous for the cruise port of Noumea. On shore Le Petit Train is the best way to travel from the port to the city to see glittering sights such as the renowned Tjbaou Centre, one of the jewels of the South Pacific. There is also hiking on Mount Koghis and Kayaking on the Dumbea River. Drink New Caledonia’s unique brand of coffee in one of the many cafes. The many brilliant French restaurants import French wines. The beaches, Anse Vata, and Baie Citron are lovely resorts with good shops.
